New iPhones may have curved screens in future
According to reports, Apple is working on developing two new technologies for iPhones: touchless gesture control and curved screens. This is aimed at developing innovative products in a smartphone market that is getting crowded with similar features like the notch, bezel-less displays, AI-powered cameras, and face unlock. Both features are in the early development stage and might take over two years to be consumer-ready.
Perform tasks by moving your fingers over the screen
Touchless gesture control would allow users to perform tasks by merely moving their fingers close over the screen, without having to tap it. The feature would function by taking into account the proximity of a finger to the screen. This means the technology would be built into the display itself instead of going the Samsung route, which relies on motion sensors on the bezels.
Samsung already has Air Gestures
Notably, Samsung had launched Air Gestures on the Galaxy S4 several years ago that allowed users to accept calls, flip through web pages, and browse photos by swiping in the air above the phone.
iPhone displays to curve inward from top to bottom
The curved iPhone screens that Apple is working on will reportedly "curve inward gradually from top to bottom." So far, Apple has been using non-flexible LCD screens resulting in every iPhone model having flat displays. Only the latest iPhone X used an OLED screen that can be curved or even folded. The iPhone X display curves slightly at the bottom but that's not noticeable to human eyes.
Samsung screens curve at the sides
Again, Samsung already offers curved screens in its smartphones, but they curve down at the edges. Samsung's flagship Galaxy S phones have had screens with curved sides for years now.
