Apple iPad Pro, with OLED screen, launching in early 2024
Apple is gearing up to launch an OLED iPad Pro in early 2024, as reported by market research firm Omdia. The new iPad Pro models are likely to sport 11.0-inch and 12.9-inch OLED displays, keeping the size in line with the current iPad Pro, which bears a mini-LED display. It's believed that LG Display and Samsung Display, two of Apple's key screen suppliers, will provide the OLED panels for these upcoming devices.
Projected production volume and suppliers
According to a supply chain survey, Apple might order around 10 million OLED iPad panels in 2024. LG Display is expected to produce six million units of both display sizes, while Samsung Display is set to manufacture four million 11-inch versions. This shift to OLED technology aims to boost the display quality of the iPad Pro lineup, giving users a more vivid and engaging viewing experience.
OLED adoption for other iPad models
Apple is also said to be exploring the use of OLED panels for other iPad models. The iPad mini and iPad Air could potentially feature OLED displays starting from 2026, further extending the adoption of this cutting-edge display technology across Apple's tablet range. This would represent a major change from the current LCD panels used in these devices.
Decline in Apple's iPad panel purchasing volume
Omdia's report also points out a predicted drop in Apple's iPad panel purchasing volume for 2023. The estimated 36% year-on-year decrease in 2023 would result in a total of 45.4 million units, marking the lowest yearly shipment since 2020. This decline could be due to various factors, such as market saturation, increased competition from other tablet makers, and possible shifts in consumer preferences.
