All three 2020 Apple iPhones to support 5G connectivity: Report
Apple plans to launch a trio of OLED iPhones in 2020 and all these models will support 5G connectivity, according to reputed analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Earlier, he had noted that only two of the three models would support the next-generation network. However, he maintains that plans have changed after Apple recently acquired Intel's modem business for $1 billion. Here's more.
2020 iPhones will support 5G with mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum
According to Kuo, Apple's acquisition of Intel's modem business means that the iPhone maker will now have more resources at its disposal to make 5G-ready handsets. Kuo also notes that all the three 2020 iPhone variants will support 5G with mmWave and sub-6GHz spectrum. He revealed that Apple is also working on a lower-cost sub-6GHz 5G iPhone but it may not release in 2020.
It's unclear if Apple will use its own 5G chipsets
While Kuo believes Apple will make its own 5G chip ready by 2020, there are chances that the company's 5G modem will launch only by 2021. Interestingly, Apple also has the option to acquire 5G chips from Qualcomm as part of their settlement.
Apple is also planning a design makeover
Further, according to a recent report, Apple will launch at least one notch-less iPhone in 2020 and that by 2021, all models will feature full-screen designs. The company will adopt an under-display camera to eliminate the notch and achieve an all-screen design. Moreover, the notch-less iPhone will also debut a "full-screen, acoustic fingerprint ID technology" that will replace the Face ID setup.
All 2020 iPhones will feature OLED displays
Meanwhile, Apple will also depart from its current and upcoming line-up of two premium OLED iPhones and a lower-cost LCD model by launching three OLED iPhones next year, according to a DigiTimes report. The report claims that 2020 iPhones will come in three new sizes: 5.42-inch, 6.06-inch, and 6.67-inch. And a change in display size suggests Apple is evidently working on a design change.
