Apple's M4 Mac mini to be its smallest desktop computer
Apple is preparing to launch a revamped version of the Mac mini, equipped with the latest M4 and M4 Pro processors, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. This significant redesign, the first since 2010, will make it the smallest desktop computer ever produced by Apple. The size of the new Mac mini is expected to be comparable to that of an Apple TV, albeit slightly taller than its predecessor which stands at 1.4-inch high.
A closer look at the features
The redesigned Mac mini will retain its aluminum casing, and has been described by insiders as "essentially an iPad Pro in a small box." Apple has reportedly tested models with at least three USB-C ports on the back, along with a power cable area and an HDMI port. The new Mac mini will be available in two versions: one with an M4 chip similar to the iPad Pro, and another with an M4 Pro chip.
Release timeline and Apple's strategy
The base model of the new Mac mini is tipped to start shipping from suppliers this August, ahead of its release later in the year. However, the high-end model featuring the M4 Pro chip will not be ready until October. The latest redesign is part of Apple's strategy to boost Mac sales following a slowdown after a pandemic-driven surge in demand for home office equipment.
M4 chip across all Macs
The introduction of the M4 generation of Apple silicon marks the first time that the company has used the same chip generation across all its Macs. Over the next year, refreshes are planned for MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro to incorporate the M4 chip. The first product line expected to receive this update could be the new Mac mini.
Pricing and future launches
It remains unclear whether the smaller size of the new Mac mini will result in a lower retail price for consumers. The current price for an M2-powered model stands at $599 (₹59,900 in India). The next generation of M4-powered iMacs and MacBook Pros are also expected to debut this year, with the MacBook Airs following in spring. The next Mac Pro and Mac Studio could make their appearance in mid-2025.
