What's the story

Apple Park, the tech giant's new $5 billion, spaceship-shaped headquarters in Cupertino, California, has a new perk to offer. Apple employees now have adjustable standing desks. CEO Tim Cook said, "We have given all of our employees, 100%, standing desks. If you can stand for a while, then sit, and so on and so forth, it's much better for your lifestyle."

New cancer

Sitting down all day isn't healthy

According to Cook, this decision came about after the company acknowledged the health risks involved with extended periods of sitting down. In 2015, Cook had said that many "doctors believe sitting is the new cancer." Even the Apple Watch has a feature to keep periodically reminding users not to sit for too long.

Information

There have been no clear benefits of standing desks either

According to a study that documented prolonged standing of 7,000 participants over a 12-year period, employees who stand more often are more likely to develop a heart disease compared to people who keep sitting.

Improve lifestyle

Apple Park holds roughly 12,000 employees

Staffers at Apple Park, that opened last year, enjoy a host of health-conscious perks including private in-house healthcare, a 100,000-square-foot gym, and a two-story yoga room. Comfort factors in the campus include $1,200 desk chairs for employees from Vitra and $2,500 chairs from Nauto Fukasawa for the cafeterias and common areas. Notably, one facility the campus does not have is of a daycare center.
