Goodbye USB-A! Apple's M4 Mac mini will get new design
What's the story
Apple is planning a significant redesign for its upcoming Mac mini M4, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.
The new model is expected to have a significantly smaller chassis, potentially similar in size to an Apple TV.
However, this compact design may come with certain compromises such as the removal of USB-A ports.
Premium version
A premium variant in the pipeline
Gurman also suggests that Apple is preparing to launch a premium version of the desktop PC, dubbed the Mac mini M4 Pro.
Despite lacking USB-A ports, it will reportedly feature five USB-C ports, an Ethernet port, an HDMI port, and a headphone jack.
Gurman clarifies that these new models will not be unveiled at Apple's September 9 event, wherein the company will launch the new iPhone 16 series, AirPods, and smartwatches.
Instead, we may have to wait until October.
Design changes
Design evolution and size comparison
The Mac mini's design hasn't been updated in a long time The last significant design refresh was nearly 15 years ago.
If rumors are accurate, the new M4 model could be half as small as its 2023 predecessor.
For comparison, an Apple TV measures 93x93x31mm while the M2 Mac mini is significantly larger at 197x197x35.8mm.
The upcoming Mac mini models are also said to include an internal power supply, eliminating the need for a separate power brick.
Port transition
USB-C becoming the new standard
The transition from USB-A to USB-C is becoming increasingly common across various devices.
For those not ready to part with their USB-A peripherals, docks and hubs are widely available.
This shift could also be seen in future Apple products like the 2025 Mac Pro and Mac Studio, as the tech world gradually moves away from traditional USB ports.
