Apple to go all in on AI for iOS 18
Apple CEO, Tim Cook, has hinted at the introduction of advanced artificial intelligence (AI) features in the upcoming iOS 18, according to a report by AppleInsider. The report reveals that Siri, Apple's virtual assistant, will be enhanced with the ability to process and condense text within the Messages app. This upgrade is part of a broader initiative to boost AI capabilities in the next iteration of iOS.
Intelligent search feature and Ajax
AppleInsider also disclosed plans for an "Intelligent Search" feature in Safari, which will allow users to condense web content. This feature, along with Siri's upgrade, will be powered by Apple's large language model (LLM), known as Ajax. According to a series of papers published by Apple, the tech giant is actively working on incorporating on-device AI processing into its iPhone. Ajax is designed to use on-device processing for straightforward responses, but may require server contact for more complex requests.
Potential collaborations and privacy concerns
Apple is also exploring collaborations with Google or OpenAI, to bolster its AI capabilities, particularly for complex requests that Ajax may not handle independently. The upcoming AI features are designed with user privacy at the forefront. AppleInsider reports that users will be alerted about privacy concerns, before Ajax accesses information from Safari or Messages. Cook emphasized Apple's commitment to privacy as a unique advantage in developing these advanced AI features.
