Certain MacBook Pros can catch fire, Apple issues recall notice
Apple is recalling some older MacBook Pros. The company has issued a notice informing customers about a battery-related issue that can cause the notebooks to overheat and catch fire. It has also started a program to help customers get the battery of affected MacBook Pros replaced for free. Here's how you can check if your notebook is affected.
Select 15-inch MacBook Pros affected
In its notice, issued a few hours ago, Apple claimed that 2015 MacBook Pro with Retina display poses a 'fire safety risk'. However, this only includes the 15-inch model of the MacBook, which was sold between September 2015 and February 2017. Apple further emphasized that apart from these, no other MacBook Pro or Mac model is at risk in any way.
Replacement program running for affected users
To tackle the issue, Apple has started a battery replacement program. The company is asking users with the affected models to drop their notebooks at the nearest Apple repair center and get their battery replaced without paying a single penny. Now, this will extend the life of your notebook, but Apple may take one or two weeks to get it done.
How to know if your notebook is eligible for replacement
Now, if you own a 2015 MacBook Pro that matches the criteria of affected models (15-inch screen size, Retina display), head over to Apple's website to check if you are eligible for a battery replacement. You'd just have to enter the serial number of the machine, and the site will let you know if the model is affected and needs a replacement.
Reason behind overheating remains unknown
Apple has not detailed what exactly is causing the battery of these notebooks to overheat. The company had even recalled 2016 13-inch MacBook Pros in April but that wasn't considered to be a safety issue. As of now, the replacement program is active all around the globe, but do keep in mind that it will only fix your MacBook's problem, not extend its warranty.
