Apple in advanced talks for iPhone camera production in India
Apple is reportedly nearing the conclusion of discussions to manufacture key iPhone components, specifically camera modules, in India. The tech giant is said to be engaging with Tata Group's Titan Company and Chennai's Murugappa Group for potential assembly and production of these parts. This move marks a significant milestone as Apple currently does not have any Indian suppliers for the iPhone's camera modules.
Apple's strategy to diversify supply chains from China
The negotiations are part of Apple's broader strategy to diversify its supply chain and component production away from China, following its 'China Plus One Policy.' A decision on the preferred partner, either Titan or Murugappa Group, is expected within the next few months. This timeline coincides with the unveiling of the iPhone 16 series. However, for the iPhone 16 range, camera modules will not be made in India.
Titan, Murugappa Group are known for their high-precision manufacturing capabilities
Both Titan and Murugappa Group are globally recognized for their high-precision manufacturing capabilities. The Murugappa Group expanded its presence in the electronics industry by acquiring a significant stake in Moshine Electronics in 2022. Similarly, Titan Company has demonstrated a strong track record of serving global clients through its subsidiary, Titan Engineering and Automation.
Apple's ambitious expansion plan in India
Local production could provide substantial cost benefits for Apple while reducing dependence on Chinese suppliers. This aligns with Apple's ambitious plan to expand its manufacturing base in India, supported by initiatives like the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme. Currently, about 70% of iPhones produced in India are exported, and Apple aims to increase this figure to 80% soon.
