Apple iPhone XR is the top-rated single-camera smartphone: DxOMark
Apple's best-selling flagship of the year, the iPhone XR, also happens to be the best single-camera smartphone currently available. According to France-based DxOMark Image Labs, the iPhone XR has beaten Google Pixel 2 to be ranked as the "top-rated single-lens phone" with an overall score of 101. Notably, the benchmarking site is yet to rate the Google Pixel 3. Here are the finer details.
About DxOMark
DxOMark is a benchmarking website that tests different types of cameras - smartphone cameras to digital cameras and lenses. Several industry-standard tests are conducted wherein 1,500+ images and 2+ hours of video are captured and examined in controlled lab environments and in natural indoor/outdoor scenes.
Apple iPhone XR beats Google Pixel 2, iPhone X
iPhone XR, with a total score of 101, beat the Pixel 2 which got an overall score of 98. Interestingly, the XR has also toppled the 2017's dual-camera based iPhone X by an overall score difference of 4 points. However, DxOMark noted iPhone XR users have to "accept some compromises when using zoom function or bokeh mode" due to the lack of secondary lens.
Here's how iPhone XR performed in photo and video tests
The iPhone XR scored 103 in the still photo test and 96 in the video department. DxOMark said the low light photography was "very good", texture and sharpness were found to be "extremely well", and autofocus was "excellent" with "good tracking capabilities". Moreover, iPhone XR's flash performance was judged better than iPhone XS Max but "still not as good as the Pixel 2".
