Apple iPad Pro 2020 vs 2018 model: Worth the upgrade?
Apple has introduced its 2020 iPad Pro lineup as a refreshed version of the flagship tablet range that was launched in 2018. The updated models bring a number of hardware improvements and capabilities while retaining a bunch of stuff we loved on their predecessors. But the question is, should you upgrade from your 2018 model to the brand-new version? Let's find out.
Apple iPad Pro 2020 vs 2018 version: At a glance
The 2020 iPad Pro range looks exactly the same as the 2018 lineup except for the new camera arrangement on the back. In terms of display, the two generations are again indistinguishable. The smaller model gets an 11-inch Liquid Retina display with 2388x1668 pixels resolution while the larger 12.9-inch variant has a 2732x2048 pixel resolution. Both models also support ProMotion technology (120Hz refresh rate).
Cameras and built-in sensors
The 2020 models come with a dual-lens setup that includes a 12MP main camera and a 10MP ultra-wide-angle lens. It also gets a LiDAR scanner on the rear for better accuracy in augmented reality apps. In comparison, the 2018 variant offers a single 12MP rear camera. On the front, the 7MP selfie camera and IR-based Face ID setup is common to both the generations.
Under the hood
The 2020 iPad Pro is powered by an all-new A12Z Bionic chipset, paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB/256GB/512G/1TB of built-in storage. In comparison, the 2018 model runs on an A12X Bionic processor, combined with 4GB/6GB (1TB model) of RAM and 64GB/256GB/512G/1TB of storage. As for battery life, both versions offer up to 10 hours of battery life on Wi-Fi.
Pricing: The key factor
In India, the 2020 iPad Pro starts at Rs. 71,900 for the 11-inch Wi-Fi variant and Rs. 89,900 for the 12.9-inch Wi-Fi only model. Interestingly, the previous-gen model is also listed at the same starting price as the latest models.
So, which one should you buy?
The 2018 iPad Pro series was truly ahead of its time and that reflects in Apple's decision to retain most of the features on the latest versions. Hence, there isn't a whole lot to upgrade. However, if you are getting your first iPad Pro, it is better to buy the 2020 edition for its improved chipset, versatile cameras, and enhanced AR capabilities.
