Don't update! iPadOS 18 is bricking M4 iPad Pro models
Apple has temporarily suspended the release of its latest software update, iPadOS 18, for M4 iPad Pro models. This decision comes in response to user complaints that the update rendered their devices inoperable or "bricked." The tech giant confirmed this issue to Engadget, stating that they have "temporarily removed the iPadOS 18 update for M4 iPad Pro models as we work to resolve an issue that is impacting a small number of devices."
User experiences highlight severity of issue
The problem was first highlighted on Reddit, where several M4 iPad Pro users shared their experiences of their devices becoming unusable after attempting to install the new version of iPadOS. One user reported that their iPad switched off during the update and would not restart. Despite having Apple Care, they were informed by an Apple Store representative that the device was "completely bricked" and needed to be sent to engineers before a replacement could be issued.
Delayed replacements and lack of acknowledgment
Another Reddit user expressed frustration over a delayed replacement for their bricked M4 iPad Pro due to stock unavailability at the Apple Store. They were told to wait five to seven days for a new iPad. The user also noted a lack of apology from the store staff and felt that they implied uncertainty about whether the update was indeed responsible for this issue.
Apple's response and future plans
ArsTechnica, which initially reported this story, noted that it is unusual for a software glitch to brick an iPad. Typically, iPads can be put into recovery mode if a software update fails. However, in light of the current issue with M4 iPad Pro models, Apple has decided not to offer the iPadOS 18 update until the problem is resolved. The company has not yet provided a timeline for when this fix will be implemented.
