Not just foldable iPhone, Apple working on foldable iPad too
Over the past few months, we have seen some patent filings suggesting that Apple might be experimenting with a foldable iPhone. However, that is not the only form factor being tested by the tech giant. According to a fresh patent, Apple is also working on an iPad-like device that will have multiple foldable regions, and will be protected by a scratch-resistant flexible cover sheet.
About the new patent
Apple's newly granted patent was originally filed in the second quarter of 2019 and was published on March 3, 2020, by the US Patent and Trademark Office. In addition to this patent, the tech giant has also received 65 other patents related to various applications.
The patent relates to techniques for forming flexible cover sheets
The patent details techniques for flexible cover sheets that may be created "to facilitate localized bending or flexing without producing unacceptable levels of internal stress." The sheets would be formed using materials like glass, sapphire, or ceramic and would be attached to the flexible display layer. The use of these heavy-duty and scratch-resistant materials will help iron out durability issues on foldable devices.
The foldable iPad could sport a 16-inch screen
In fact, last year, IHS Markit analyst Jeff Lin had claimed that Apple is working on a foldable iPad that will feature MacBook sized screen. However, he didn't specify any sizes. Perhaps, the foldable iPad will feature a 16-inch screen since that's the biggest screen available on MacBooks at present. Lin noted that the device will support 5G connectivity and pack an A-series processor.
Apple is also working to prevent foldable screens from cracking
Last year, Apple also patented a unique way to prevent a foldable device from cracking up. The company has suggested heating a specific portion of the display from the inside in order to counter stresses that can cause the glass to crack in low-temperature conditions.
