Spotify now shows in-app pricing to iPhone users in EU
Apple has finally approved Spotify's application to display in-app pricing information, for iPhone users in the European Union. This decision comes after a prolonged legal dispute between the two tech giants. Starting today, EU-based iPhone users will have access to details such as promotional offers and pricing information for each subscription tier on Spotify, including how much a plan will cost once a promotion ends.
Spotify's response to Apple's antitrust fine
Spotify has chosen to adopt the "music streaming services entitlement" introduced by Apple, following a €1.84 billion (roughly $2 billion) EU antitrust fine in March. The penalty was imposed for "abusing its dominant position" in music streaming. This move is seen as Spotify's response to the complicated new developer terms proposed by Apple last week, which would have allowed EU developers to link external payment options while still giving Apple a share of off-platform sales.
Spotify criticizes Apple's proposed developer terms
Spotify has criticized Apple's proposed developer terms, describing them as demanding "illegal and predatory taxes." The music streaming giant has been in a legal tussle with Apple in the EU since 2019, when it first filed an antitrust complaint over App Store rules. As recently as March, Spotify claimed that Apple was obstructing efforts like today's changes.
