Cupertino tech giant Apple held its 'Let Loose' event today. The firm introduced a bevy of new gadgets, including the refreshed iPad Air with an M2 chip, and the 2024 version of the iPad Pro (with an M4 processor). An all-new slimmer and lighter Magic Keyboard, as well as the Apple Pencil Pro, have also been introduced. Let us take a look.
iPad Air available in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes
Apple has announced the launch of its latest 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Air models, marking the first update to the range in over two years. The new models continue to feature LED displays, and are positioned between the standard iPad model and the high-performance iPad Pro in Apple's product lineup. The newly launched iPad Air models are compatible with the second-generation Apple Pencil and Magic Keyboard, features previously exclusive to the iPad Pro.
Advanced M2 chip powers new iPad Air models
The updated iPad Air models are equipped with Apple's advanced M2 chip, a significant upgrade from the previous M1 chip. This enhancement makes the new iPad Air approximately 50% faster than its predecessor, and three times faster than the A14 Bionic-powered iPad Air from 2020. The devices also support Wi-Fi 6E, with select models offering 5G support for enhanced connectivity.
Apple offers enhanced camera and storage options
Apple has relocated the camera on the new iPad Airs for a more natural appearance when held in landscape mode. Both front and rear cameras boast of 12MP sensors. The starting storage capacity for these models is set at 128GB, with prices starting at ₹59,900 for the 11-inch model or ₹79,900 for the 13-inch model. However, Apple now provides additional storage options of up to 1TB, for users requiring more space without needing to upgrade to an iPad Pro.
iPad Pro comes with an advanced M4 chip
Apple has showcased its latest iPad Pro at the "Let Loose" event. The 7th-generation device is the first to feature the M4 chip. The M4 chip in the iPad Pro offers "up to 50% faster performance" compared to the M2 chip in its predecessor, according to Apple. The GPU has also been upgraded, integrating key technologies for gaming such as ray tracing. Furthermore, the new neural engine boasts 16 cores, which Ternus claims is "60x faster" than its first-generation NPU.
It debuts OLED display with Ultra Retina XDR
The new iPad Pro now features an OLED display, a feature that has been part of the iPhone lineup since 2017. This advanced display technology, known as "Ultra retina XDR," delivers up to 1,600-nits of brightness due to the innovative "tandem OLED" technology. The inclusion of this enhancement further distinguishes the Pro from other iPads, and introduces nano texture display tech into the iPad series for the first time.
New iPad Pro models have slimmer design and enhanced features
The new iPad Pro is available in both 11-inch and 13-inch versions, weighing 0.98 and 0.58kg respectively, each equipped with the new OLED display. This upgrade offers a superior contrast ratio, more vivid colors, and a quicker refresh rate. Due to this OLED panel, the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is approximately 20% slimmer while the 11-inch model is around 15% thinner.
Storage and pricing
The new iPad Pro comes with a LiDAR scanner and a novel feature named "Adaptive Flash," which identifies when you're trying to scan documents. The front-facing camera has been relocated to the side of the device, a change that positions the iPad as a potential laptop substitute. Base storage for both sizes is now 256GB. Prices start at ₹99,900 for the 11-inch model, and ₹1,29,900 for the 13-inch version.
Apple unveils Pencil Pro, a decade after the original stylus
Apple has introduced its latest innovation, the Pencil Pro, nearly a decade after the original Apple Pencil's debut in 2015. The stylus, which had seen minimal updates since its inception, is now undergoing a significant revamp. The most notable update prior to this was in 2018 when magnetic charging was added to the product line. Last year saw the introduction of a more affordable model with reduced features and Type-C charging.
Pre-orders now open
The Pencil Pro features a squeeze sensor that allows users to switch between brushes with ease. Additionally, it includes a haptic sensor for tactile feedback. A standout feature of the Pencil Pro is the inclusion of Find My functionality, designed to help users locate their device if misplaced. The Pencil Pro is priced at ₹11,900 and is currently available for pre-orders. Shipping of the new device is scheduled to commence next week.
Meet the new Magic Keyboard
Apple has introduced a new version of its Magic Keyboard at the event today. The tech giant announced that the keyboard accessory for the iPad has undergone a "complete redesign," resulting in a more compact and lightweight model. The updated Magic Keyboard now includes a function row, offering quick access to controls such as screen brightness, volume adjustment, and media playback.
Improved responsiveness, haptic feedback
The revamped Magic Keyboard boasts aluminum palm rests and an expanded trackpad. Apple claims that the keyboard offers improved responsiveness, haptic feedback, and Type-C charging capabilities. This marks the first major revision of the Magic Keyboard since its launch in 2020. The addition of the function row aligns it with its sibling product, the Magic Keyboard Folio, in terms of functionality.
How much does it cost?
The latest Magic Keyboard is available in two sizes to fit both the 11-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models. It comes in black and white color options. Customers can pre-order today at the same price as its predecessor: ₹29,900 for the 11-inch model and ₹33,900 for the 13-inch variant. The product is expected to be available in stores next week.
Smart Folio for the iPad Air
In a related announcement, Apple has also introduced a new Smart Folio for the iPad Air. This accessory can attach magnetically, and supports multiple viewing angles, offering more versatility than its previous version. The Smart Folio is up for grabs in charcoal gray, light violet, denim, and sage shades. It is priced at ₹8,500 for the 11-inch iPad Air model and ₹10,900 for the 13-inch variant.
