Apple's location-tracking AirTags might be launched this year
Apple's location-tracking tags, which were expected to be launched alongside the iPhone 11 last September, may finally go official by the end of this year. In his latest note, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has claimed that Apple will "ramp up the production of its ultra-wideband AirTags in the second or third quarter of this year," suggesting that these trackers would be released in 2020 itself.
Apple could announce the AirTags at WWDC
Without giving a specific release or launch date, Kuo mentioned that Apple would be producing "tens of millions of units by the end of the year." Hence it is possible that AirTags could be announced at the iPhone event in September. However, considering these location trackers are an entirely new product category, Apple may want to announce them sometime earlier, perhaps at WWDC 2020.
What do we know about Apple AirTags
Apple AirTags will be a tile-like tracker. Understandably, they will be attached to personal belongings like bags, laptops, wallets, and help you track their locations in the Find My app on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. According to 9to5Mac, the tags will use "offline finding capabilities of iOS 13" to allow your compatible device (say, an iPhone) to detect the tracker signal.
New iPhone users could see locations of items in AR
Apple tags are likely to be small circular tags that will come equipped with a U1 locator chip. When a signal is detected, the Find My app will automatically notify you of the tag's location. In case you have a U1-equipped device (like iPhone 11), you will be able to see the exact location of the tag in an augmented reality view.
Meanwhile, Apple might launch iPhone SE 2 next month
Further, Apple has started the production of the all-new iPhone SE 2 and is expected to launch the low-cost model sometime by March-end. The upcoming handset will come with an iPhone 8-like design, Touch ID home button, 4.7-inch LCD screen, and the flagship A13 Bionic chipset. Moreover, it will be priced around $399 (Rs. 28,500) and go on sale from April 3 onwards.
