Anthropic's Claude chatbot is using Brave Search for web queries
What's the story
Anthropic, a leading AI research company, has added a new web search feature into its AI-powered chatbot platform, Claude.
The exact search index powering the feature was previously unknown. However, new findings indicate that Brave Search is what powers it.
The involvement of Brave Search was highlighted by software engineer Antonio Zugaldia and British programmer Simon Willison.
Integration details
Anthropic adds Brave Search to its subprocessor list
Zugaldia found that Anthropic had added "Brave Search" to its subprocessor list in the documentation. The list consists of partners who process data for Claude.
Willison's report also noted that at least one search query in both Claude and Brave returned identical citations, further confirming the integration of Brave Search into Claude's web search functionality.
Other partnerships
Brave Search's role in other AI chatbots
Brave Search isn't a newcomer in the AI chatbot arena. It is already powering the search capabilities of another chatbot platform, Mistral's Le Chat.
Back in February, Brave and Mistral announced that Le Chat would leverage Brave's search API for real-time web results.
This further cements Brave Search's position as a key player in offering web search capabilities for AI chatbots.
Partnership secrecy
AI companies often keep search index partnerships confidential
It's not unusual for AI companies to keep their search index partnerships under wraps, possibly for competitive reasons.
For example, OpenAI has a partnership with Bing but employs other undisclosed sources to improve the search experience in ChatGPT.
This trend suggests that many tech firms like to keep their strategic alliances under wraps for business advantage.
