Android Q will have full-fledged dark mode, Googler says
Since last year, several Android apps, from Contacts to YouTube, have been updated with a fancy dark mode designed to save power and put less strain on our eyes. Now, a new Android Police report indicates that this streak of introductions will eventually result in a system-wide dark mode, one that would come with Android Q. Here are the finer details.
Android Q and the possibility of dark mode
We all expected a dark mode on Android Pie, but, sadly, Google didn't serve the theme. Now, an engineer from the company has practically confirmed that the feature is on the cards for the next version of Android. Lukasz Zbylut, who is a Product Manager, recently wrote in a Chromium Bug Tracker thread that 'dark mode is an approved Android Q feature'.
Here's what Zbylut wrote
"Dark mode is an approved Q feature [...] The Q team wants to ensure that all preloaded apps support dark mode natively. In order to ship dark mode successfully, we need all UI elements to be ideally themed dark by May 2019," Zbylut wrote.
Dark mode likely to be controlled from settings
The comment from the engineer not just noted that dark mode is coming to Android Q, but also highlighted that the feature would be controlled from a master setting. He made two comments regarding this. One said the feature would be controlled via Settings -> Display -> Dark Mode, while the other mentioned Display -> NightMode. There's no saying which one it would be.
Interestingly, Google changed viewing settings of the thread
Notably, when the reports of dark mode on Android Q started getting attention, Google changed the privacy setting of the Chromium Bug Tracker thread. This made it inaccessible to the public, however the screenshot of the comments are still on the internet. Not to mention, this removal further reaffirms that the plans for Android Q's dark mode are active and moving ahead.
