This Android 15 feature will improve your phone's battery life
Google's upcoming Android 15 QPR1 Beta 2, is set to introduce a significant feature for Pixel devices. This update will allow users to restrict their device's battery charging capacity to a maximum of 80%. The feature was initially introduced in the first beta version but lacked user control. However, with Beta 2, users can now choose whether or not they want to use this charging limit.
Enhanced user control over battery charging
The new feature is located in the Battery section of the Settings menu, under "Charging optimization." This option becomes visible after the device is plugged in for the first time. It works alongside Adaptive Charging, a feature that mirrors Apple's Optimized Battery Charging by stopping at 80% and completing to 100% an hour before the usual unplugging time.
How the new charging limit feature works
When users select the "Limit to 80%" option, a shield icon appears on their battery status bar. This indicates that the phone will only charge up to 80% and no further. The widget, lock screen, and always-on display also show a message stating "Done charging." This user experience is similar to that of the Pixel Tablet and Charging Speaker Dock.
Aim to extend battery lifespan
The primary purpose of this feature is to prolong the phone's battery life and slow down its degradation rate. This is based on the behavior of lithium-ion batteries, where charging a battery to 100% puts significant stress on the cells, potentially leading to faster wear over time. Google has yet to update its Pixel support documents with details about the new charging limit feature.
