Amazon launches 'Kindle Kids Edition' for your little one
After unveiling a bunch of fancy Echo devices, Amazon has expanded its Kindle line-up with a new 'Kids Edition'. The e-Book reader, as the name suggests, has been specifically designed for kids with capabilities that not just promise a fun reading experience but also skill-building at the same time. Here's all you need to know about it.
Latest Kindle optimized for kids
The new Kindle Kids Edition is a customized avatar of the sub $100 Kindle introduced back in March. It packs the same 6-inch, 167 ppi e-ink display with an adjustable front light that enables reading in different environments. But, along with the regular hardware, Amazon has given a bunch of kid-specific features to keep your little one hooked on a good book.
First, you'll get FreeTime Unlimited content for one year
First, the device comes with a free year-long subscription of FreeTime Unlimited, the service that provides access to a collection of more than 20,000 books, videos, and apps. It provides access to some really good content for kids, including chapter books and award-winning books like the Island of the Blue Dolphins, El Deafo, and Bridge to Terabithia.
Then, there are these interesting skill-building capabilities
Along with FreeTime Unlimited, Kindle Kids Edition also comes with a bunch of software tweaks, including the automated ability to show definitions for difficult words. Kids can even select a word and use the in-built dictionary to look up meanings. Plus, there is a vocabulary builder that saves difficult words and shows them as flashcards for future review and learning.
Plus, there are kid-friendly wallpapers, achievement badges
Among other things, the new e-reader offers a bunch of kid-friendly wallpapers, achievement badges like Book Worm and Over Achiever, and an easy discovery that helps kids lookup titles even with the wrong spellings.
And, you get a long-lasting battery
The new Kindle comes with a battery that would last weeks without interrupting your kid's reading experience. It is up for pre-orders at $109, which is $20 more than the model it is based on. It will start shipping from October 30 in a selection of kid-friendly colors and patterns, including blue, pink, a Space Station design, and Rainbow Birds design.
