Amazon launches 2MB Kindle Lite app in India
Amazon has launched a data-light version of its Kindle app called Kindle Lite on Android. The India-first product is being touted as the lightest reading app by Amazon at a size of 2MB. It consumes less data, saves up on storage space, and most importantly, can work on slow 2G or 3G internet connections in the country, where mobile networks continue to be patchy.
App features personalized recommendations, free e-book samples
Despite being 2MB in size, the app retains most of Kindle's original features. These include personalized reading recommendations, Whispersync (cross-device syncing of e-books), free e-book samples, and instant reading (allows users to start reading without having to wait for the full book to download).
Read titles in Hindi, Tamil, Marathi
Since it's an India-first app, Kindle Lite offers readers over 30,000 free e-books in English, Hindi, Tamil, Marathi, Gujarati, and Malayalam. Along with access to localized content, users can also download e-books and store them for offline reading. "Apps constantly compete for space on a mobile phone and Kindle Lite solves this problem for our readers," Rajiv Mehta, Country Manager, Kindle, said.
Amazon offering up to 80% cashback on first e-book
As an introductory offer, Amazon is rolling out a special cashback of up to 80% on the first e-book on the Kindle Lite app, if users make the purchase via Amazon Pay. The app has already garnered 50,000 downloads on the Play Store with 4.1 rating. Earlier, Amazon had also launched the web version of the Kindle app, which is 47MB in size.
