India celebrates its first-ever National Space Day
India is commemorating its first-ever National Space Day today, under the leadership of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). This significant event marks the country's rising stature in the global space community. August 23 holds historical significance as it aligns with the successful landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission on the Moon last year.
Chandrayaan-3 mission: A milestone in India's space exploration
The Chandrayaan-3 mission marked a significant milestone in India's space exploration journey. On August 23, 2023, ISRO successfully landed the Vikram Lander on the lunar surface, making India the fourth country to achieve this feat and the first to land near the Moon's southern polar region. Following this achievement, August 23 was declared as "National Space Day."
Tribute to India's space journey
The theme for National Space Day 2024 is "Touching Lives while Touching the Moon." This theme pays tribute to India's impressive history of space exploration and its transition from humble beginnings to a global leader in space technology. It underscores how ISRO's initiatives have significantly impacted Indian society, contributing to societal progress, economic growth, and international collaboration.
Grand event in New Delhi
The main celebrations for National Space Day are taking place at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, where a two-day event is being held. This event includes interactive exhibitions, high-profile sessions, and major announcements about India's space achievements. For those who cannot attend in person, the festivities are being streamed live on ISRO's website and YouTube channel.
'Space on Wheels's initiative to inspire future scientists
In addition to the main event, an outreach program called "Space on Wheels" is being conducted at universities and colleges across India. These mobile exhibitions aim to educate students about ISRO's activities and India's groundbreaking space missions. The initiative is designed to ignite curiosity and inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers to pursue careers in space exploration.
National Space Day: A platform for young minds
National Space Day also provides a platform for young minds to engage in interactive activities like student quizzes. This initiative highlights India's commitment to fostering a deep interest in space science among students, ensuring the legacy of exploration continues. ISRO Chairman S Somanath has credited PM Narendra Modi for his crucial role in advancing India's space sector. Union Ministers Hardeep Singh Puri, Nitin Gadkari, and Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya took to X to celebrate India's space achievements.
