An air purifier or air cleaner is a device designed to specifically remove particulate contaminants from the air that flows through it. Most consumer-grade air purifiers are designed to work indoors with efficacy determined by the volume of spaces they can cater to. Air purifiers are marketed as a quality-of-life accessory for asthmatics, those allergic to pollen, and those inhaling second-hand cigarette smoke. Air purifiers are usually standalone units with replaceable and user-serviceable filters in most cases. Some models can be hooked up to the HVAC or central air conditioning systems in commercial establishments and larger spaces. Air purifiers can catch and prevent the circulation of potential allergens and small particulate matter including dust, pollen, pet hair, mold spores, dust mite feces, smoke particles, and VOCs. Active air purifiers release negatively charged ions into the air causing the particulate matter to stick to surfaces. Passive purifiers collect dust using built-in filters as air passes through them, making them more effective in some cases.
