AIIMS Delhi is now performing surgeries using a robot
What's the story
In a major leap in medical technology, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi has installed a state-of-the-art surgical robot.
The advanced equipment, which is now a part of the Department of Surgical Disciplines, makes AIIMS one of the first government hospitals in India to adopt such sophisticated technology for general surgery.
Technological advantages
Surgical robot's capabilities and benefits
The surgical robot provides a magnified, 3D view of the operative field and unparalleled dexterity via its robotic arms.
This enables surgeons to perform complex procedures with precision, especially in surgeries that need meticulous dissection and suturing in limited anatomical spaces.
Dr. Hemang Bhattacharjee, a Professor of Surgery at AIIMS, noted complex surgeries like colorectal surgeries, esophagectomies, and pancreatic surgeries can now be performed with lesser complications with this technology.
Patient benefits
Faster recovery and shorter hospital stays
The introduction of the surgical robot is expected to lead to shorter hospital stays and quicker recovery times for patients.
This is especially useful for those undergoing complex procedures that were traditionally invasive.
The technology also ensures that patients from diverse socio-economic backgrounds can access advanced healthcare services, bridging the gap between private and government hospitals in terms of medical technology adoption.
Training opportunities
Surgical residents to receive training on robotic surgery
Not only is the installation of the surgical robot at AIIMS a boon for patients, but it also offers an amazing learning opportunity for medical students.
Sunil Chumber, head of the Department of Surgical Disciplines, said that over 100 surgical residents will get an opportunity to train on this latest technology during their residency period.
This brings AIIMS's training curriculum at par with other renowned medical institutes across the world.
