Reliance unveils JioTV OS for set-top boxes at AGM 2024
Reliance Industries Limited (RIL) has introduced a new software solution, JioTV OS, during its 47th annual general meeting. This innovative operating system is designed to power Jio set-top boxes and provide an enhanced user experience on large TV screens. The company describes it as a "100% homegrown operating system," for big TV screens promising a faster and smoother user experience.
A hub for high-quality streaming and OTT platforms
The JioTV OS is capable of supporting video streaming in up to 4K resolution, and incorporates technologies such as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. This ensures superior picture and sound quality, akin to a cinema theater experience from the comfort of one's living room. The operating system also supports all major OTT platforms, live television streaming, as well as TV shows within a single service.
JioTV OS integrates AI-powered voice assistant
The JioTV OS has integrated Hello Jio, an AI-powered voice assistant that was introduced a few years ago. This feature allows users to discover content and control the set-top box using their voice. The assistant is now enhanced with generative AI technology for improved natural language understanding, aiming to make interactions feel more human-like.
JioTV OS features its own app store
The JioTV OS also introduces its own Jio AppStore, specifically designed for JioHome. This includes shopping apps with an augmented reality (AR) shopping experience, as well as fitness and education-related apps. The OS can also control smart home accessories like ACs, smart lights, and security cameras. These can be managed by the updated JioHome app.
JioTV+ updates and JioPhoneCall AI
Reliance has also announced updates to JioTV+, which provides access to over 800 TV channels in HD quality across 10 languages and 20 genres, along with support for OTT platforms like Prime Video and Disney+ Hotstar. The company introduced Jio 'Phone Call AI,' a feature that can record any call and automatically transcribe, summarize, and translate it on JioCloud. This service is available on both Android and iOS devices without requiring an app installation.
JioTV+ offers personalized content and social features
JioTV+ features a powerful recommendation engine that suggests personalized content based on users' viewing habits. It also includes a Catch-up TV facility, allowing users to revisit shows from up to seven days prior. Social features are integrated into the platform, enabling users to share what they're watching with friends, join live watch parties, and discuss shows in real-time for a more interactive experience.
JioHome aims to revolutionize Indian homes with IoT solutions
JioHome is set to transform Indian homes into smarter and more connected spaces with its new IoT solutions. These are fully integrated with the JioTV OS, allowing seamless control of devices such as lights, air conditioners, and security systems. The JioHome app will serve as the control center for this ecosystem, offering features like malware detection and guest Wi-Fi management for both convenience and security.
