After ChatGPT, Apple Intelligence may soon get Google's Gemini AI
What's the story
Apple appears to be gearing up to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) prowess by adding Google's Gemini into Apple Intelligence.
The move was teased in a recent iOS 18.4 beta update, indicating that users could soon have the option to choose Gemini as their preferred AI, in addition to OpenAI's ChatGPT.
The tech giant had announced plans for such integration in early 2024 but it has taken nearly a year for the plans to come to fruition.
Discovery
iOS beta update hints at Gemini integration
The possibility of Google's Gemini being integrated into Apple Intelligence was first reported by 9to5Mac.
The tech news outlet found a mention of the development in a backend update that accompanied the latest beta version of iOS.
Notably, the code mentions 'Google' but not 'Gemini' directly, much like how it mentions OpenAI without directly mentioning ChatGPT.
Strategy
Apple's AI strategy and user privacy
Apple's approach to AI integration is simple. Siri will first process user requests locally on the device. If advanced processing is needed, the query will be sent to an AI model such as ChatGPT or perhaps, Gemini.
Users will have the option to choose if their requests are sent to these external services. Apple's current deal with OpenAI ensures user queries are processed without storing personal data.
Similar privacy safeguards are expected if Gemini makes its way into the system.
Expansion
Future plans for Apple Intelligence
Apple is also looking to integrate other AI models, including those from China's Alibaba and Baidu. This would give users a wider selection to choose from.
Gemini's addition is expected to make Apple Intelligence more capable without costing users anything.
Although there have been rumors of paid AI features being introduced in the future, those are not expected until at least 2027.
