
HAL reveals flagship training jet 'Yashas': Better than MiG?

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has unveiled its upgraded Hindustan Jet Trainer-36, now called 'Yashas.'
The flagship training aircraft has been extensively modified to enhance its take-off characteristics and spin resistance.
The new name was announced at the ongoing Aero India 2025 show in Bengaluru today. So, how does it fare against the MiG? Let's find out.
Technological upgrades
It features modern avionics and cockpit
The Yashas has been upgraded with advanced avionics and a state-of-the-art cockpit to make training more effective and operations more efficient.
The upgrades also focus on reducing weight and replacing old imported equipment with Indian line-replaceable units (LRUs).
Extensive changes to the aircraft have improved its capabilities so much that it deserves a new name.
Operational capabilities
Yashas supports Stage II pilot training
The Yashas is meant for Stage II pilot training, counter insurgency, as well as aerobatics.
It is equipped with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC)-controlled AL55I Jet engine that guarantees reliability and better thrust management.
The plane also has a stepped-up rear cockpit with a drooped nose for superb all-around vision and improved situational awareness with state-of-the-art glass cockpit with MFDs and HUD.

The MiG-29 is a 4th-generation jet fighter designed by the former Soviet Union to take on American aircraft like F-15 Eagle and F-16 Fighting Falcon. It has a top speed of MACH 2.35 and a range of 1,345 nautical miles. It is 17.3 meter long.
