    What's the story

WhatsApp achieved a new milestone this New Year's Eve. Over 75 billion messages were sent by users on the Facebook-owned app.

It is the maximum messages ever sent through a chat app in one day, reported VentureBeat.

Of the 75 billion messages, 13 billion were images and 5 billion videos.

WhatsApp's previous record was 63 billion messages, sent on New Year's Eve of 2016.

    Details

75bn messages despite outage, no Blackberry OS, Windows Phone services

Arguably world's most-used messaging mobile app, WhatsApp currently boasts of 1.3 billion monthly active users.

75 billion messages were exchanged despite an hour-long outage reported across the world. It was the heaviest in western Europe.

The feat assumes significance also because it was achieved without Blackberry OS and Windows Phone services, which WhatsApp had discontinued on December 31.

Meanwhile, Instagram will soon allow users to post its Stories directly as WhatsApp Status. The option of sharing Stories on Facebook was introduced last October. It's now being brought to the popular messaging app. Just like Stories, the shared WhatsApp Status disappears after 24 hours.
