#TechBytes: 5 big features coming to WhatsApp
What's the story
Over the years, WhatsApp has evolved into one of the most loved messaging platforms in the world.
The service, which caters over a billion users, has been improved with features like picture-in-picture mode, swipe-to-reply, and Sticker support.
But, that's not the end of the line. WhatsApp is slated to get some more features and they'll drastically upgrade your messaging experience.
Let's take a look.
Feature #1
Dark Mode for messaging in low light
First up, it is the new Dark Mode - a capability that would turn your WhatsApp experience, including its background, dark or blackish.
With this, WhatsApp won't strain your eyes in low light and will consume less power than normal.
Apps like Twitter and YouTube already have a Dark Mode and WhatsApp for Android and iOS is slated to get it in coming months.
Feature #2
Group Calling made simpler
WhatsApp users will also get a dedicated button to start a group call with members of any group existing on the service.
With just a tap on this button, you'll be able to select participants (only those in your contacts) and start an audio/video call with them right away.
This feature is available on iOS and is expected to hit Android devices pretty soon.
Feature #3
Preview videos from notifications
Soon, WhatsApp users will also have the ability to preview videos in the notification menu.
This means, all received clips and GIFs will play in the notification itself, just as you can see an image in the same area.
The feature, which can raise some serious privacy concerns, has been spotted only on iOS but is expected to hit Android devices as well.
Feature #4
QR codes to add contacts easily
Just like Instagram's nametag feature, WhatsApp will also bring user dedicated QR codes.
These codes, when shared, will help other WhatsApp users add the sharing party as their WhatsApp contact.
The feature could come handy when a person is new on WhatsApp and wants all his Facebook friends to add him/her as a contact on the messaging service.
Feature #5
Play voice messages consecutively
WhatsApp is also working on a feature that would automatically play voice messages received one after the other.
This way, when someone sends back-to-back messages, you'll be saved from the hassle of tapping on every single one individually.
The feature was spotted in a beta version (2.18.362) for Android and is expected to come in a stable version in the future.
