30-year-old unopened Nintendo game sold for Rs. 7 lakh
A rare fantasy video game by Nintendo has been sold for Rs. 7 lakh in an online auction. The title, Kid Icarus, was purchased in 1988 but was left forgotten for more than 30 years in a bag - untouched and unopened. Now, it has been auctioned for $9,000 by the kid it was purchased for, CNN reported. Here are the details.
Scott Amos went to clear out attic, discovered Kid Icarus
After being prompted by his mom on multiple occasions, Nevada-based Scott Amos (40) visited his childhood home attic to clean out his years-old junk. While doing so, he found a sealed copy of Kid Icarus cartridge resting in a bag from JC Penny department store. It even had a receipt which showed the title was purchased all the way back in 1988 for $38.45.
Then, Amos learned how rare the game was
Amos initially thought the game may be worth a few hundred dollars. He left it in open but was completely surprised after learning about the real value of the thing from Deniz Kahn, the CEO of a Denver-based company which grades rare games. "What you have.. is something special, and it's worth a good chunk of change," Kahn said after seeing the game's images.
Later, the game was shipped to Kahn
Kahn told Amos the game may be worth $10,000 and asked him to ship it to his company for authenticity assessment. The owner of the title did as asked and the authenticity of the rare title was verified. Post this, Kahn connected Amos with Heritage Auctions, which sold the title for a whopping $9,000 or Rs. 7 lakh in the Indian currency.
What Valarie McLeckie from Heritage Auctions said about the game
"Finding a sealed copy in the wild is very difficult. It's nigh to impossible because there's less than 10 known sealed that are in the hands of collectors currently, and we don't suspect that there are very many, if any, [more] that are still sealed."
Interestingly, no one remembers purchasing this game
While Amos has made a huge chunk of cash from the rare game, no one in his family actually remembers purchasing this title. However, going by the December date on the receipt, they think it might have been purchased as a Christmas present back in the day. "(My mom) thinks she put it there and never got it back out," Amos emphasized.
