With ₹5785 crore assets, TDP candidate stirs poll attention
P Chandra Sekhar, the Telugu Desam Party's (TDP) candidate for the Guntur Lok Sabha seat, has stirred up the current electoral race with his family asset declaration. The affidavit reveals a staggering total of ₹5,785 crore in both movable and immovable assets. This includes Sekhar's personal assets of ₹2,448.72 crore, his wife Sriratna Koneru's assets worth ₹2,343.78 crore and their children's nearly ₹1,000 crore worth of assets.
Sekhar's declaration outshines previous wealthiest contestant
The Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) had previously reported that Nakul Nath, son of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Kamal Nath, was the wealthiest contestant in the first phase of the Lok Sabha polls with assets close to ₹717 crore. However, Sekhar's declaration significantly surpasses this figure, potentially placing him among the richest contestants in this electoral race. Additionally, his family carries a liability of ₹1,138 crore to JP Morgan Chase Bank, United States as a Line of Credit.
From village roots to a physician teacher: Sekhar's journey
Sekhar's journey from a small village in Andhra Pradesh, Burripalem, to becoming a physician teacher at Johns Hopkins University-Sinai Hospital is noteworthy. He founded UWorld, an online learning and study resources platform. His academic achievements include an MBBS degree from NTR University of Health Sciences Vijayawada in 1999 and an MD (Internal Medicine) from Geisinger Medical Center in Danville, Pennsylvania in 2005.
Sekhar's political involvement and future election prospects
Sekhar has been an active member of the TDP's NRI wing since 2010, supporting several welfare programs due to his interest in public service. Despite his desire to contest the Lok Sabha polls from Narasaraopet segment in 2014, TDP allocated the ticket to R Sambasiva Rao for political reasons. In the forthcoming elections, Sekhar will be pitted against the YSR Congress Party's K Venkata Rosaiah for the Guntur Lok Sabha seat.
Sekhar's significant investments and luxury assets
In a joint tax filing with his wife for the US Tax Cycle Year January 2022 to December 2022, Sekhar declared ₹605.57 crore. He holds investments and shares in several US-based firms, contributing to his substantial wealth. His luxury assets include high-end vehicles such as a Rolls Royce Ghost, Mercedes Benz, and Tesla in the US. These declarations further highlight the magnitude of Sekhar's financial standing ahead of the upcoming elections.
