Made-in-India aircrafts now to be used for commercial flights
What's the story
PM Modi's "Make in India" initiative is all set to reach a new level. Soon, we will be flying regional flights in indigenously-built flights.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has allowed Dornier 228, manufactured by Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), to be used for civilian flights.
Until now, this 19-seater flight has only been used only by defense forces.
Here's all about it!
About
Details about the Dornier 228
The Dornier 228 is a "versatile multi-purpose light transport aircraft." This plane has maximum cruise speed of 428kmph and a 700kms range.
What's more, it can also be used for night-flying.
It has been developed for meeting various requirements like commuter transport, air-taxi operations, coast guard duties and maritime surveillance among others.
After test flights in Kanpur last month, DGCA gave the go-ahead.
UDAN
How will this help PM Modi's UDAN scheme?
This move will help Modi's Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik (UDAN) scheme. It aims to develop the regional aviation market by making flying affordable.
Now, HAL can sell these planes to Indian airlines, giving a boost to UDAN. Reports suggest special incentives would be given to operators using these aircrafts.
HAL may also sell these planes for civilian use to Nepal and Sri Lanka.
