Navjot Singh Sidhu's bank accounts seized for non-payment of dues
Income Tax (I-T) department seized two bank accounts of cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu after he lost an appeal related to his tax assessment. The Punjab Tourism Minister's dues stand at Rs. 52L. He declared certain expenditure towards dresses, travelling, etc. for which he couldn't provide bills/invoices. As he couldn't authenticate the transactions, I-T department disallowed 30% of the total expenses to prevent revenue leakage.
What does Sidhu have to say?
Sidhu said once he was made aware of the I-T notices, he cleared the issue that very day. He further said, "Can you even think that a person who gives away Rs. 40 to 50L just like that would not pay income tax of a few lakhs?" Further, he has accused former deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal of devising this "conspiracy to malign him."
Meanwhile, Sidhu is known to stoke controversies
This isn't Sidhu's first brush with controversy. Earlier, he was convicted to three years in jail for being involved in a road rage death in 2006. However, an SC appeal rejected his conviction. Last year, a petition was filed against him in the Punjab and Haryana HC for cracking "vulgar jokes" on "The Kapil Sharma Show." He was also asked to quit the show.
