Virbhadra Singh: News

Virbhadra Singh was a senior political leader of the Indian National Congress (INC) and a six-time former Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. He was born to Raja Sir Padam Singh in the royal family of the erstwhile princely state of Bushahr. Singh entered the Lok Sabha in 1962 and was again elected in the 1967, 1971, 1980, and 2009 General Elections. He served as the Union Deputy Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation (1976-77); Union Minister of State (MoS) for Industries (1982-83); Union Minister of Steel (2009-11); and Union Minister for MSMEs (2011-12) in the Congress-led governments at the Centre. Singh was appointed as the President of the Himachal Pradesh Congress Committee in 1977, 1979, 1980, and 2012. He was elected to the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly nine times and served as the state’s Chief Minister for six terms during 1983-90, 1993-98, 2003-07, and 2012-17. Singh was the longest-serving Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh. In July 2021, he passed away after a prolonged illness, aged 87.
