Former minister Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi dies after 9yrs in coma
Former union minister and veteran Congress leader Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi, who has been in a coma since 2008, passed away today at noon. He was 72. "He had been critically ill for the past one month and unfortunately succumbed to his illness," Apollo Hospital confirmed. In 2008, Dasmunsi had suffered a massive stroke which had left him paralyzed.

Dasmunsi was one of WB's most popular leaders. He was known for his friendly ties across parties. He first became a union minister in 1985, and was in the cabinet during 2004-2008. He also served as president of the All India Football Federation for 20 years. He was so popular that he was included in Congress' 90-member campaign committee for the 2016 WB elections.
Wife Deepa Dasmunsi carried on his political legacy
The 2008 stroke cut off blood supply to his brain and caused irreversible damage. He was breathing and eating through medical assistance. Post that, his wife Deepa Dasmunsi became active in politics. She also contested and won parliamentary polls and became a union minister in the UPA government. Priya Ranjan Dasmunsi is survived by his wife and son Priyadeep Dasmunsi.
