Inside Rajya Sabha, Vice President worries about outgoing MP's weight
Congress lawmaker Renuka Chowdhury, whose tenure as Rajya Sabha MP is nearing end, was asked by Chairman Venkaiah Naidu to lose weight. Naidu's statement came as a rebuttal to Chowdhury's speech when she asked the former to start throwing his weight around, as it concerns her. To which, Naidu suggested her to reduce her weight. The Vice President's comment left the Upper House in splits.
Chowdhury and Naidu: The conversation as it happened
Chowdhury said, "He knows me from many kilos before. Sir, many people worry about my weight but in this job, you need to throw your weight around." Naidu replied, "My simple suggestion is, reduce your weight and make efforts to increase weight of the party."
Exchange of sly remarks: Definitely not the first for Chowdhury
Not long ago, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took a dig at Renuka Chowdhury. While the PM was giving his speech during the budget session, the Congress MP burst out into a loud laughter. After this, Modi said, "Ramayan serial ke baad aisi hasi sunne ka ab saubhagya mila hain." The comment had invited severe criticism from Opposition leaders, especially women.
Renuka Chowdhury wants more women MP in the house
Renuka Chowdhury's farewell speech at the Upper House was, however, not only about exchange of digs. She said 11% women strength in the Rajya Sabha was pathetic. The Congress MP said from 'Shah Bano to Surpanakha', she witnessed making of history in her tenure.
