Uttarakhand CM questions 'values' of women who wear ripped jeans
The newly elected Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat has criticized women for wearing ripped jeans and wondered what values they will impart to their children, triggering a protest from opposition parties. Rawat was speaking at an anti-substance abuse workshop organized by the Uttarakhand State Commission for Protection of Child Rights in Dehradun on Tuesday. Here are more details.
Youngsters today are following strange fashion trends: Rawat
Rawat said, "Due to a lack of values, youngsters today are following strange fashion trends and consider themselves to be big shots after wearing jeans ripped at the knees. Women also follow such trends." The Chief Minister said, "These days youngsters go to the market to buy ripped jeans. If they can't find one, then they cut their jeans using scissors."
Rawat termed ripped jeans as 'Kainchi wala Sanskaar'
According to media reports, Rawat termed the ripped jeans Kainchi wala Sanskaar. Comparing Indian and Western culture, Rawat said that while westerners are practicing yoga and covering their bodies, Indians wear ripped jeans and are running toward nudity.
Rawat talked about a woman he met in a flight
Describing the attire of a woman who sat next to him on a flight, Rawat said, "The woman was wearing boots, jeans ripped at the knees and bangles in her hands. Two children were traveling with her." He added, "She runs an NGO, goes out in the society, and has two children but she wears jeans ripped at knees. What values will she impart?"
'He has no right to comment on someone's personal attire'
Meanwhile, State Congress Spokesperson Garima Dasauni slammed Rawat and said that it doesn't suit a Chief Minister to make a derogatory remark about someone's sartorial choices. According to the Indian Express, Dasauni said, "Being a CM doesn't give him the right to comment on someone's personal attire. Such remarks should be avoided. Why are BJP leaders tight-lipped when their leaders face sexual harassment allegations?"
Opposition wants Rawat to apologize for his remarks
Dasauni advised Rawat to avoid making such comments and said they can hurt public sentiments. Meanwhile, Uttarakhand Congress Chief Pritam Singh termed Rawat's remarks shameful and demanded that he apologize to women. The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) also slammed Rawat for his distasteful remarks.
