Noida jinx: Why are UP CMs so scared of Noida?
Since 1988, no UP CM has visited Noida in the fear of losing their chief-ministership. Apparently, former CMs Mayawati, Mulayam Singh Yadav and Kalyan Singh have "suffered" due to the Noida curse. Now, UP CM Yogi Adityanath might challenge this superstition by joining PM Modi in Noida to inaugurate Delhi Metro's Magenta line. So, will Yogi break the three-decade-old "Noida jinx"?
What is the Noida jinx?
According to the Noida jinx myth, any CM who visits Noida will lose his/her post shortly thereafter. In 1988, Vir Bahadur Singh lost power days after visiting Noida. Subsequently, his successors, ND Tiwari, Yadav, Mayawati and Singh suffered the same fate. In 2011, keeping fear at bay, Mayawati did visit Noida to inaugurate the Rashtriya Dalit Prerna Sthal, but she lost power in 2012.
Due to the Noida jinx, CM Akhilesh didn't go there!
Akhilesh, the engineer who boasts of modernizing UP, took this myth seriously. In his five years as CM, he didn't visit Noida even once. In fact, he inaugurated Greater Noida development projects and NASSCOM's Noida headquarters from Lucknow and Delhi, respectively. After the Dadri lynching, he didn't visit the deceased Mohammad Ikhlaq's family either. Instead, he asked for them to be brought to Lucknow.
Isn't it time this superstition is broken?
However, despite Akhilesh resolutely staying away from Noida, he lost power in 2017. Further, according to UP's history, no UP CM has won two consecutive terms. These "facts" should help in breaking the "bad luck" surrounding Noida. If Yogi does, in fact, participate in the inauguration of the Metro's 12.64-km Kalkaji Mandir-Botanical Garden section in Noida, he will be doing Noida a favor.
