BJP to elect new national president by mid-March
What's the story
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has said the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will have a new national president by mid-March.
"We have the process. According to the information that is there in the public domain, we will get the party's new president by mid-March," he said.
The election for the National President is set to take place after the party's state units hold their respective elections.
Election delay
Delay in election process due to state elections
The election of a new national president was first due in January. However, it was delayed because of the Delhi Assembly elections and elections pending in several state units.
According to the BJP's constitution, at least 50% of state units need to elect their respective presidents before the national president is elected.
Therefore, the election process at the state level is being expedited.

Current president's tenure and party's electoral performance

Under his leadership, BJP contested elections in 35 states and won in 16 states. Similarly, in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the party secured victory and returned to power for a third successive term.
