Wife Sunita denied permission to meet Kejriwal in jail: AAP
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal's wife, Sunita Kejriwal, was refused permission to visit him in Tihar Jail on Monday, the Aam Aadmi Party has said. According to an NDTV report, the jail administration has cited Delhi Minister Atishi's scheduled visit with the CM on Monday as the reason for denying Sunita's request. On Tuesday, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann will visit Kejriwal. Reportedly, as per the jail's rules, two people are allowed to meet an inmate at a time.
Tihar Jail regulations allow only two individuals to visit
When CM Mann met Kejriwal on April 15, the AAP's Organisation General Secretary Sandeep Pathak was also with him. However, according to the jail rules only two visits are allowed in a week. If Atishi and Mann have their meetings with Kejriwal on Monday and Tuesday respectively, no further visits can be scheduled for the remainder of the week. It is likely that now Sunita will be allowed to meet the Delhi CM only next week.
Row over Kejriwal's arrest
To recall, on March 21, the Enforcement Directorate arrested Kejriwal in Delhi excise policy case. His arrest has been marked by controversy with the AAP alleging that Kejriwal was detained by the Bharatiya Janata Party-led government to cripple the opposition ahead of the Lok Sabha elections. A row has also erupted over the alleged mistreatment of the CM in custody. The AAP has alleged that Kejriwal was denied necessary medication for his diabetes since his arrest.
Kejriwal's judicial custody extended till May 7
On April 23, a Delhi court extended the judicial custody of Kejriwal till May 7. The Delhi CM will continue to be lodged in Tihar Jail until then. To recall, Kejriwal is awaiting the Supreme Court's verdict on his plea challeging his arrest by the ED in the case. The CM's plea challenging his arrest was heard on April 15 but did not result in immediate relief.
Sunita Kejriwal to lead AAP's campaign efforts in Delhi
In the absence of Kejriwal—the face of the AAP—Sunita is expected to lead the AAP's campaign efforts in Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Gujarat. She recently made her campaign debut in a roadshow in Delhi, rallying for the Lok Sabha election in favor of the AAP's East Delhi candidate. Separately, Kejriwal continues to serve as the chief minister despite his arrest.
