Sumitra Mahajan: News

Sumitra Mahajan is a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) politician, eight-time Member of Parliament (MP), and former speaker of the Lok Sabha. She did her MA and LLB from Indore University, Madhya Pradesh. Between 1982 and 1985, she was a Corporator in Indore Municipal Corporation and served as Deputy Mayor during 1984-85. She successfully contested her first Lok Sabha election in 1989 from Indore, defeating Prakash Sethi of the INC. She was elected to the Lok Sabha consecutively in the 1991, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, 2009, and 2014 elections, becoming India’s longest-serving woman Parliamentarian. From 1992 to 1994, Mahajan was the Vice-President of Madhya Pradesh BJP and served as the party’s General Secretary in 1998-99. She was Union Minister of State (MoS) for Human Resource Development (1999-2002), Communications & Information Technology (2002-03), and Petroleum & Natural Gas (2003-04) in the Vajpayee government. In 2014, Mahajan became the second woman after Meira Kumar to be appointed as the Lok Sabha speaker. She retired from electoral politics in 2019 and, in 2021, was awarded the Padma Bhushan.
