UP wants separate lanes for MLAs, MPs at toll booths
The BJP government has focused on removing the VIP culture prevalent in the society. But the UP government seems to be taking a contrary stand. The government has issued a directive to provide exclusive lanes to MLAs and MPs at UP's toll plazas in case of traffic jams. It also reminded officials that no toll is to be charged from MLAs, MLCs or MPs.
Separate VIP lanes may increase incidents of violence, bureaucrats say
Bureaucrats are unhappy with the move. It will create difficulties for toll plaza operators, they say. It isn't uncommon for legislators to assault toll employees when asked to pay up or wait in line. With this notification, such violent incidents are likely to increase, bureaucrats believe. According to rules, legislators' or parliamentarians' cars are exempt from toll tax, but their unofficial accompanying vehicles aren't.
Adityanath has till now followed a "no VIP culture" policy
However, the Adityanath government has followed a "no VIP culture" policy till now. Earlier, the CM directed MLAs to shun hooters and party flags on their cars. The letter to district magistrates from Additional Chief Secretary Sadakant reportedly hasn't specified any reason for the direction.
