Sasikala's husband Natarajan, who 'made Jayalalithaa CM,' dead
VK Sasikala's husband M Natarajan died in Chennai early this morning after multiple organ failure. He was 74. It was Natarajan who had introduced Sasikala to the late Jayalalithaa, a relation that was to shape her life and career. He repeatedly claimed that he "made Jayalalithaa CM." But it was at Jayalalithaa's behest that Sasikala cut off ties with her family members, including Natarajan.
Early life of a could-have-been power couple
Born in Vilar village, Thanjavur, Natarajan was a student leader, close to the DMK. He married Sasikala in 1973, when he was working in the state's Directorate of Information and Public Relations. During 1976-80, after Natarajan lost his job, Sasikala opened a video rental shop, which soon turned into a videography business. She got the chance to film Jayalalithaa's events, and a bond developed.
The rise to power and the eventual breakup
The couple stood by Jayalalithaa during trying times, eventually moving into her 'Veda Nilayam' residence. But in 1989, rumors surfaced that she was 'heavily manipulated' by Natarajan. She denied the claims. However, seven years later, he was thrown out for trying to dominate her. Natarajan claimed it was he who had left contact, and that he still had influence. But the relationship never recovered.
Politics first, personal life second
Jayalalithaa offered Sasikala a chance to remain on her side, provided she end ties with her family, including her nephew and husband. Sasikala complied. She was rarely seen in public with Natarajan. Last year, after she was made AIADMK general-secretary, Sasikala dropped his name and added 'VK' as prefix to revert to her maiden name. She's currently in prison in a disproportionate assets case.
Natarajan had battled ill health since months
Natarajan's liver and kidney were failing. In October, he underwent a life-saving double organ transplant. On March 16, he was admitted to Chennai's Gleneagles Global Health City for chest infection. He died at 1:35am today. His body will be kept at his Besant Nagar house till 11am, before being taken to his hometown. Sasikala is expected to attend his last rites.
