MP says 'hell will be empty after Kumbh;' case registered
What's the story
Samajwadi Party Member of Parliament (MP) Afzal Ansari has landed in trouble for his controversial remarks on Maha Kumbh.
A complaint has been filed against him for his statements, which not only hurt the dignity of his office but also hurt Hindu religious sentiments.
The complaint was filed by Dev Prakash Singh, a former District Cooperative Bank President.
Controversial comments
Ansari's remarks on Maha Kumbh stir controversy
Commenting on the belief that bathing at the Sangam- where Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati meet- purifies a person from sins, Ansari said if every sinner takes this holy dip, "Heaven will be houseful."
"It is believed that people's sins will be washed away by taking a holy dip at the Sangam during Maha Kumbh. Looking at the massive crowd, it seems now no one will be left in hell and heaven will be houseful," Ansari said.
Past backlash
Ansari's previous controversy over cannabis consumption
Further, he slammed the government for not giving an accurate death count of a recent stampede at Maha Kumbh.
Ansari had earlier invited backlash for comments about cannabis consumption at Kumbh Mela, insinuating that saints and sadhus indulged in substance abuse.
He said that marijuana is often consumed during religious events, where it is referred to as a prasad.
He argued that if marijuana is considered sacred and a part of religious rituals, then it shouldn't be illegal.
Legal action
FIR registered against Ansari under BNS
These remarks had already invited criticism from Hindu religious communities.
After a massive backlash from Hindu leaders and groups who accused him of defaming their religious practices, Ansari had offered an unconditional apology.
In his apology after the cannabis consumption remarks, Ansari had clarified that his comments were meant to highlight concerns over drug smuggling and not to target religious practices.
