Sam Pitroda, born Satyanarayan Gangaram Pitroda, is a telecommunications engineer, development & policy thinker, author, and entrepreneur who is credited with leading the telecom revolution in India in the 1980s. After obtaining a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Physics from Maharaja Sayajirao University, Gujarat, Pitroda went to the US for further education in Electrical Engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. During the 1960s and ‘70s, he worked in the United States telecom industry, innovating and patenting new technologies. Pitroda returned to India in the 1980s and founded the Center for Development of Telematics (C-DOT). He became an advisor to the then Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and led India’s telecom revolution. Pitroda led six technology missions for different sectors and headed the Indian Telecom Commission. He later served as the Chairman of the National Knowledge Commission between 2005 and 2009 under the then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Pitroda has had a long-time association with the Nehru-Gandhi family and is considered an advisor to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi.
