Posters featuring Robert Vadra surface in Amethi amid candidate suspense
Posters featuring Robert Vadra, husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, have surfaced in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, amid the suspense over Congress's candidate for the seat. These posters were spotted near the Congress party office and have sparked conversations about Vadra's potential candidacy in the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The posters carry the slogan "Amethi ki janta kare pukar, Robert Vadra ab ki baar," which translates to "the people of Amethi want Robert Vadra this time."
Why does this story matter?
Amethi, once a stronghold of the Gandhi family, was won by the BJP in the 2019 elections. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani defeated Rahul Gandhi, ending his 15-year reign in Amethi. Since the setback, the Congress has been hesitant about nominating a candidate for the Amethi seat. The Bharatiya Janata party (BJP), on the other hand, has named sitting MP and Union Minister Smriti Irani as its candidate.
Vadra's recent comments have fueled speculation about his candidacy
Vadra, himself, had previously hinted at a potential entry into politics. Speaking to ANI, he revealed that residents of Amethi have been urging him to represent their constituency. "The people of Amethi understood their mistake. And I feel now they want a Gandhi family member to represent the constituency," stated Vadra. He also claimed that Amethi is upset with the sitting MP (Irani), and the people of Amethi have understood their mistake.
Irani criticizes Congress for delay in announcing candidate
Meanwhile, Irani, who has already begun her campaign, criticized the Congress for their delay in announcing their candidate. She took a jab at Rahul and Vadra, stating: "Jijaji ki nazar hai, saale sahab kya karenge. (brother-in-law is eyeing the seat, what will he (Mr. Gandhi) do?)." She added, "Has this ever happened? Just 27 days left for the election, yet the Congress has not announced its candidate." Amethi will go to the polls on Friday (April 26).
