Rajya Sabha elections for 12 vacant seats on September 3
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced that the Rajya Sabha elections for 12 vacant seats will be held on September 3, 2024. The notification for these elections will be issued on August 14, and the last date for filing nominations is set as August 21. Vacant seats distributed across nine states
The 12 seats include two seats each from Assam, Bihar, and Maharashtra, while one seat each is from Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Tripura, Telangana, and Odisha. Ten of these seats became vacant after sitting members, including Union Ministers Piyush Goyal, Sarbananda Sonowal and Jyotiraditya Scindia, were elected to the Lok Sabha in the recent Lok Sabha elections. The remaining two were left vacant due to member resignations.
Separate elections for each seat
The ECI has stated that separate elections will be conducted for each Rajya Sabha seat on September 3. The results will be announced on the same day. The last date for withdrawal of nominations for Assam, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Tripura is August 26. For Bihar, Haryana, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Odisha, the last date is August 27.
