Rajnath Singh: News

Rajnath Singh is a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), the Defence Minister of India, and a former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Singh did his MSc in Physics from the University of Gorakhpur and was initially a lecturer of Physics at KBPG College Mirzapur. He was associated with the RSS since his early teens and became a student activist of the ABVP. Singh emerged as a young leader of Jana Sangh and later of the BJP. He served as the Minister for Education in the BJP government of Uttar Pradesh from 1991 to 1992. He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 1994 and served as the Union Transport Minister in the Atal Bihari Vajpayee government during 1999-2000. Singh became the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2000, serving in the office till 2002. In 2003, Singh returned to the central government, this time in the capacity of an Agriculture Minister. He served two terms as the President of the BJP from 2005 to 2009 and from 2013 to 2014. Singh was the Home Minister of India in the first Modi government and became the Defence Minister when NDA returned to power in 2019. He has been a Lok Sabha MP since 2009.
