Rahul's 'lies' part of international conspiracy to oust Modi: Sarma
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has accused Rahul Gandhi of spreading "lies" as part of an "international conspiracy" to oust Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking to reporters in Haryana on Sunday, Sarma said that the Congress leader spread lies during the Lok Sabha elections and now wants to "abolish" reservations for OBCs and SC/ST communities.
Sarma questions Gandhi's stance on OBC leadership
Sarma also questioned why the post of the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha was not given to an OBC leader if PM Modi is an OBC. "During the Lok Sabha elections, Rahul Gandhi roamed around with a copy of the constitution in all rallies. Where has the Constitution gone now? Now he doesn't say that the constitution is in danger," Sarma said.
Sarma expresses confidence in BJP's victory
Sarma also expressed confidence in the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) return to power in Haryana. He said that the response from the people has been "positive" during meetings he held in Sonipat, Julana, and Kalka. Haryana will go to polls on October 5 to elect 90 members of the state legislative assembly to form its next government. The counting is set to take place on October 8.
BJP emerged as single-largest party in 2019
In the 2019 Haryana Assembly elections, the BJP was the top dog, scoring 40 seats. Congress snagged 30 seats, while the Jannayak Janata Party (JJP) took home 10. Independents won seven seats, and the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) and Haryana Lokhit Party (HLP) got one each. To set up a government, a party or coalition needs at least 46 seats in the state assembly.
