Coca-Cola founder sold shikanji, McDonald's boss ran dhaba: RaGa
At an OBC outreach rally in New Delhi Monday, Congress President Rahul Gandhi spoke about lack of opportunities in India, while 'interestingly' comparing it to the US. Gandhi said Coca-Cola founder sold 'shikanji' (a drink famous in North India) while McDonald's founder ran a dhaba; they only grew because their talents were recognized, he added. His comments are bound to spark a row (and jokes).
Coca-Cola founder mixed sugar and water, says Rahul Gandhi
"Everybody here must have heard of Coca-Cola... everybody's heard about the company, right? Now tell me who started Coca-Cola? Who was he; does anybody know? Coca-Cola's founder used to sell shikanji in the United States, he used to mix sugar in water," said Gandhi.
Here's video of his incident (in case you have doubts)
BJP only wants to make 15-20 people rich: Rahul Gandhi
Launching a scathing attack on PM Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi said, "BJP's strategy is clear. Just 15-20 rich capitalists will give thousands of crores to PM Modi and all benefits will go to just those 15-20 rich people." He alleged the country had become a slave to 2-3 BJP leaders and RSS. Gandhi added BJP leaders were afraid of providing their honest opinions.
Fact check: Here's who actually founded Coca-Cola and McDonald's
Asa Griggs Candler, who founded Coca-Cola, was a business tycoon. In 1888, he bought the soft drink's formula from its inventor John Pemberton and several other shareholders for $550, and the rest is history. Further, Richard and Maurice McDonald started the fast-food chain in 1940 as a hamburger stand. In 1955, businessman Ray Kroc purchased it from the brothers and took it to incredible heights.
This only adds to Gandhi's long line of humorous errors
Just a reminder: This is the same person who called Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and Chandra Shekhar Azad 'NRIs'; who termed poverty "a state of mind"; and who thinks India is "bigger than Europe and US put together". He has unintentionally promoted other political parties too: while inaugurating "Indira Canteens", he kept saying "Amma Canteens". The BJP calls him "an expert without knowledge".
